In this talk, we introduce the Swedish Learner English Corpus (SLEC). SLEC is a recently compiled learner corpus containing argumentative texts written by Swedish junior and senior high school students. SLEC provides rich metadata on the students’ background, making it possible to empirically study relations between the linguistic properties of student texts and various extralinguistic and learner variables. For example, and unlike most other available learner corpora, SLEC features detailed information about the students’ extramural English (EE) activities (i.e., English language activities that students engage in outside of the classroom; see Sundqvist, 2009). The talk will also include a case study where we examine the effect of EE activities on both lexical diversity and noun phrase complexity in high school student writing.
