Seminar: “‛one could hardly give a man tinned salmon’: Lexical sociolinguistics, indexicality and enregisterment”
- Date: –17:00
- Location: Zoom meeting
- Lecturer: Dr Laura Wright (University of Cambridge)
- Organiser: Department of English, Uppsala University
- Contact person: Merja Kytö
The talk will be based on the chapter on indexicality and enregisterment due for Dr Wright’s forthcoming book in Blackwell’s Language and Society series, and aimed at “showing how words can become indexical of social qualities in specific times and places, and showing how words left out of dictionaries – commercial words, brand names – act like the rest of the wordstock for speakers” (p.c.). Dr Wright will start by explaining the relevant concepts in some detail, and then demonstrate the developments with lexemes from Late Modern English.
