The Swedish Institute for North American Studies


The Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) was established in June of 1985 by the Uppsala University Board of Regents. Since October, 1987, Dr. Erik Åsard has been director of the Institute. SINAS has been part of the Department of English since January 1, 2003. It has the following main objectives:

  • to conduct and promote research in the area of American Studies, especially interdisciplinary research in the humanities and the social sciences;
  • to coordinate the efforts of scholars in a variety of disciplines related to American Studies, and to provide a forum for communication;
  • to arrange courses, lectures, conferences, and seminars for the purpose of sharing knowledge and generating interest in the field.
