About the course:
What does it mean for literature to be ‘English’? How does ‘Englishness’ get constructed in literature, and how does that compare with ‘British-ness’ and ‘English’ culture outside of the British Isles? These and related questions will be explored in a brief survey of literature in English, from the early modern to the contemporary period, which will also introduce the student to varieties of genres and modes of writing in English, to images of locality, nationhood, empire and marginality as they have appeared over several centuries, and structures of feeling concerned with such topics as gender, wealth, urbanity, ruralism, fellowship and enmity.
